Fiesta Feelings at River Ranch Stockyards by Georgia Phillips

On May 26th, I planned and executed my own styled shoot here in Fort Worth, for the first time. We got to shoot on a Saturday morning at River Ranch Stockyards, and it was a lot of fun. Hot and exhausting, but a whole lot of fun. There were lots of things that impressed me, and there were a few things I learned that I want to gracefully improve for the next one. It was very exciting.

Just wanted to say thank you to all the vendors that got to participate. It can be a little nerve-wracking working with new vendors, having no clue what they're bringing to the table (literally). But what is life without chance?! These vendors blew my mind with their talent and commitment. That says a lot to me. Also, this turned out to be an all girls collaboration, and I loved every minute of it. (With the help of a few husbands that did all the heavy labor) ;)

Here is my all-girl team that I would recommend to anyone:

Hair: Adrienne Vigil
This girl has been a friend and sista' of mine for years and I appreciate her talent and passion for beauty. She did an amazing job working with me and other vendors, while making our model's hair look AMAZING.

Makeup: Karina Lugo
Karina stepped in as the makeup artist at the last minute, and blew us all away. Her artistry looked gorgeous on camera and in person.

Dress/Flowers/Decor: Lizeth Garcia
MY GIRL! Lizeth is one of my favorite people in the world. This girl is an artist that makes the world more beautiful every day. Her design skills are New York level, and I love her for it. She also makes incredible jumpsuits and cocktail dresses, which will also be up on the blog very soon.

Invitations: Madpaperie and 24th Ave Designs.
Yes, I chose two because their styles were different.. and also it was my shoot and I do whatever I want. ;) I was very impressed with both of their invitation suites. Cristina with 24th Ave. Designs came through with a gold foil press invite (um..amazing!) and Michele with Madpaperie did a hand torn water color style invite, which looked delightful on camera.

Jewelry: Alicia G Exclusive
Alright y'all. You love tassels and leather earrings? Alicia is your girl. Her neon jewelry went along perfectly with our theme. Everyone is in love with this girl's work after our shoot on Saturday. I've already bought 2 pairs of her earrings and will be purchasing more this year! (She even came through with making me some CLIPS, cause my ears aren't pierced)

Cake: Pretty Sweet Cakes
OOOOMMMGGG, this cake!!!! SCROLL DOWN! I cannot wait for y'all to see this. The very sweet Paulina showed up with a three tier cake that was decorated with perfection. Everyone was in love with this cake. This will take y'all's breath away.

Model: Fabiola Penrod
I have to give a shoutout to Miss Fabi. Thank you so much for being such a good sport. Wearing makeup and hair in the hot nasty sweaty sun, while looking beautiful the whole time! YOU ROCK.

I'm planning on trying another styled shoot this year, WHEN IT COOLS DOWN! ;) If you've never done one before, try it!

Everyone have a blessed day. I'm feeling blessed, myself.

My Thank You Card To Journalists by Georgia Phillips

"I think that more diversity is a good thing, and fresh points of view articulated by people who are committed to excellence in journalism is a beneficial change in the American media landscape."

Here I am, finally updating the blog I promised myself to stay on top of. It's been exactly eight months since my last blog post. That's not to say that I haven't been busy with photoshoots, thank you JESUS. But I feel as though I have let down my inner literacy enthusiast.

I have never claimed myself as a writer. In college, I studied photojournalism while working for the college newspaper, as the photo editor in chief. Every day, I found myself admiring the writers that were able to eloquently compose an article on the things that mattered to them. These articles would range from politics, the economy, concerns over education, to viewpoints on feminism, racism, and global warming. There was a small amount of occasions where I was granted the opportunity to write a viewpoint, but would immediately feel insecure stepping out of my element. My job as a photo editor, and photojournalist, was to tell the store and release the facts through photography. To write, and to do it well, would be the hardest task for me. I did it. But I know I sucked at it. I knew that there was a special place for writers, and you had to be called to take on such an important job.

So, why is journalism so important to me?

Journalism is important to me having been in the position as a photojournalist, hoping to interpret the facts and the story through photos. I was responsible for telling the truth, and keeping readers informed.

โ€œThe purpose of journalism,โ€ write Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel in The Elements of Journalism, โ€œis not defined by technology, nor by journalists or the techniques they employ.โ€ Rather, โ€œthe principles and purpose of journalism are defined by something more basic: the function news plays in the lives of people.โ€ The lives of people. Can you say that out loud? Journalists are responsible for interpreting the lives of every day people. Victims, political leaders, concerned citizens, survivors, and people like you and me.

That's not to say that journalists have never misquoted, or made any mistake. Having been on the receiving end of criticism after a misspelling in one of my viewpoints, I knew the importance of discipline. I learned my lesson and definitely faced the consequences. But that's also not to say that just anyone can take on the job of a journalist. It's tough stuff.

I admire the working journalists we have today who are covering elections, policies, investigations, economic changes, showing up at the White House to ask the press secretary the questions that we all ask our family members every day, across the dining room table. You are the vehicle of communication. Thank you for serving us. Thank you for caring about the things that matter. Thank you for keeping us informed. Thank you journalists. We all can't do what you do.

Dear Parents... by Georgia Phillips

Last week, I got to embark in one of my first newborn sessions. Samuel's mommy was a relative of a Quince birthday girl I photographed last year. She called me and asked me to photograph her son Samuel, who was only 3 weeks old! Aww!

I informed her to be fair, that we didn't normally shoot newborn photos and this would almost be a trial photoshoot. I cut her a deal, monetary-wise, and she agreed to give us a try. She also wanted pics of her older children with Samuel. This sounded like fun!

It was definitely different than my usual photoshoots, and I did as much research as I could for newborn shoots. (Believe me, I have a lot of respect for photographers who do it all the time). My favorite part of this whole experience was how was I going to keep these kids entertained while photographing the baby. In my quick thinking, I had them sit down on my paper black backdrop, and gave them some white chalk and start drawing. I was quite proud of my readiness, and how we incorporated the drawings into the photoshoot.

It was fun, and YES, IT ABSOLUTELY GAVE ME BABY FEVER. I love babies. Any child under 4 is my favorite to play with. Just hand them over to me, and I get happy. With that said, I'm obviously not ready to take on the challenge of motherhood (hence, I only get excited about kids who are under 4). I am an after-school dance teacher, and I love my students more than anything in the world. It's insane how much life they give me. But I know I only spend about 3 1/2 hours with them a week. So, to digress a little from my photoshoot, I wrote a letter to all parents...

Dear Parents,

You are rockstars. All of you. One day, I'll get to put on the superhero costume that has the giant M across the front, and daily save the world that my kids live in. There are days where I say, I could never do what you do. I'm scared in one way, but hopeful in another way. But I'm sure there was at least one time in your pre-parent life that you said the same exact thing. Just know that no one else is doing the job you are... You are that child's parent. No one else gets to say that they're raising your child. They look to you, in times of fear, in times of excitement, sadness, happiness, and so much more. Parents, you are a blessing. You are what your child needs, even if they don't verbally express that.

Blogging? What? by Georgia Phillips

Georgia, 25, owner of G.Shelle Photography. Loves dogs and Pizza Hut.

Honestly, I had been hesitant about blogging on my photography website for a while. I just kept thinking "No one is THAT interested in my personal life!"

Well, that's why I decided to mix in a little bit of business and personal life.

Today, while discussing some insecurites that had developed while feeling restless around the house, I had mentioned how personal I took WORK. I felt as though that if I wasn't doing something productive, that there was something wrong with me. This is coming from a busy body who feels like she needs to have a say in everything, know what's going on at all times at every location, and not be lazy. If I ever indulged in buying clothes online, or sitting on the couch and watching TV on my off days, I felt as though I was doing something wrong.

But Jared then said "you need to learn how to relax"

What the heck does that mean? I AM RELAXED.

I soon found out that what he meant by "relax", was to simply REST.

When fellow Christians tend to quote any verse from the bible about rest, they usually open their bible (apps) to Matthew 11. It states that we all need to come to Jesus and find rest, when our burdens are heavy.

But what about when we're just busy? We're not necessarily upset or stressed. Just BUSY!

So, I found a verse in Genesis, which bible readers know as THE BEGINNING. The creation. The first chapter. In the second chapter, I read:

2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

This was a revelation (ha-ha. get it?) for me. It is a holy deed to take a rest day. If I want to follow the ways of God, I really needed to consider this whole REST thing, and take it seriously.

Some may think "Well, isn't that what Sundays are for?" Yes. Technically, the sabbath is usually Sunday, in the minds of generalized Christians. But what about the christian photographer, who is also the paid praise and worship director at her church? That's a job. So, no. Sunday is not my sabbath.

So, here I am.. resting, on a Monday... but blogging on my business website.

I need to be a little more holy, I guess.

Despite my ramblings about rest... Down below is a photo from our latest shoot from over the weekend! Alyssia was the winner of our Mini Session giveaway raffle! She is getting ready to celebrate her big 15! Woo woo!

Until next time,

Georgia
